Jarrod R. Smith, MD
Jarrod R. Smith, MD is a sports medicine fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon. He is a native of South Point, Ohio. While at South Point High School, he was named All-Ohio in two different sports and graduated as valedictorian of his class.
In college, he was a member of the 2001 NAIA National Champion football team at Georgetown College. Dr. Smith then transferred to the University of Tennessee, where he was coached by Phillip Fulmer.
Dr. Smith is a 2010 graduate of the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. He is a member of the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Chattanooga, Tennessee. While in residency, Dr. Smith scored in the 99th percentile on his in-training exam. He has also presented his research at national and international meetings.
Dr. Smith has co-authored textbook chapters on elbow ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction and revision elbow ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction. He has also co-authored a surgical technique article describing a novel construct for rotator cuff repair.
Dr. Smith completed an orthopedic sports medicine fellowship at The Andrews Institute in Gulf Breeze, Florida. The fellowship afforded Dr. Smith the opportunity to work side-by-side with renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews. The fellowship provided intensive exposure to team coverage including the University of West Florida, Auburn University, and Tampa Bay Rays (MLB).
His recent publications include a study of the muscle activation patterns during the overhead football throw.
Outside of the field of medicine, Dr. Smith is an accomplished quarterback coach. For ten years he ran a private quarterback development service. In addition, Dr. Smith has worked countless quarterback camps across the nation. He also developed negative stimulus recognition training for quarterbacks, which is a novel pattern recognition technique that helps the quarterback read defenses more effectively.
Since 2016, Dr. Smith has served as team physician for the Ironton Fighting Tigers’ athletic programs. He has also served as the team’s quarterbacks coach since 2017
Dr. Smith practiced in Ashland, Kentucky for 5 years. He joined SCOTT ORTHOPEDIC CENTER in 2021.
Dr. Smith and his wife, Bethany, have four children.
